My favorite books

my favorite booksYou might wonder what do I wanna write about but it is only about me and what I love to read, and about some of my very nice collections (“at least for me”).

At this moment I am in love with all of the books from Dominik Dán. He is Slovak writer born in 1955.

Author writes about criminal cases which are happening in “Our city”. You will never find the real name of the city even though he is mentioning the suburbs so you know it is “Our city/Bratislava” :-) Each and every book is so different even though there is the same group of detectives from homicide unit. I’ve read all 7 books within 2 weeks and you can not even imagine how happy I was when I found on martinus.sk that there is brand new book out! Whohoooo :-D

Books listed as issued:

  • 2005 - Popol všetkých zarovná
  • 2005 - Nehanebné neviniatko
  • 2006 - Beštia
  • 2006 - Sára
  • 2007 - Cela číslo 17
  • 2007 - Červený kapitán
  • 2008 - Hriech náš každodenný
  • 2008 - Knieža smrť – this one is brand new one and I’ve ordered it already! I can not wait till it comes :-)

My “English” written collections:
Harry Potter (Joanne K. Rowling) – I still remember the times, when I was living in Aussie land and bought my first four books :-). After reading them all, I had to wait year or 2 to get another and another. Finally the seventh been published and my best friend has sent it to me so I could read it all. Time to time, she was nasty to me and told me what will happen but I didn't believe her until I read it. Dot, I still remember when you've told me that Dumbledore will die! To be honest with you I couldn't believe it, but after I reading it, I was in tears.
The Tales of Beedle the Bard (Joanne K. Rowling) – This book is coming to me, as I've recently ordered it. I can not wait!
His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman) – I haven't finished the third book yet, as I need to be in some kind of special mood. But I must say it is better book then HP, and till that time HP was my favorite one!
Memoirs of a Geisha (Arthur Golden) – the most romantic book I’ve ever read. And yet I must tell you the truth I’ve cried when I read this book.

Then I also love Agatha Christie and her Hercule Poirot. I have all of the books that were issued in Czech language. I also love the serial that is on TV and I think I've seen all parts. Yeap I am a bit crazy :-)

Let’s also not forget about Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. Those books I have in Slovak language. It's a bit sad when the interpretations are not the same as you see huge differences between the books 1,2 and 3 :-( and let's not talk about Hobbit as that has been translated terribly). One day I'll buy those books in English and I will have the possibility to compare.

The most beautiful thing about the book is when you start reading it, you are transported away into a world of fantasy and imagination. I really do like this "world" if I may call it like that.

And last but not least is The Vrba-Wetzler report (Utekl jsem z Osvětimi from Rudolf Vrba). If you ever get a chance to read it I do recommend you to do it. Be prepared that you'll be crying like hell especial when you start thinking on the fact that all that has happened.
